emergency dentistry

In the case of a dental emergency please contact our office as soon as possible for advice on how to proceed or the same day appointment. A dental emergency should be treated promptly to avoid permanent damage and additional complications. Our office makes every effort to see you on the same day if considered necessary. If your emergency is occurring after office hours you will be contacted by a dental professional and advised on how best to manage the emergency.

Although it is important to contact us regarding a dental emergency for appropriate advice on how to manage it, there are a few things that can be done at home to address pain and mitigate damage. It is important to keep the affected area clean and use compresses for swelling ONLY on the outside of the mouth.

TOOTH PAIN

Sudden or intense tooth pain can have a range of causes and should be addressed as soon as possible. Rinse the mouth with warm water and take an over the counter pain medication if needed. If something is lodged between teeth and causing pain, DO NOT attempt to remove with a sharp object. Tooth floss can be gently moved around the lodged object.

BROKEN TOOTH

If a sizeable part of the tooth is broken off and can be located, place in a container of warm milk and bring with you to your appointment. In some cases, we can consider using the tooth fragment as part of the repair. Rinse the mouth with warm water and if any swelling has occurred a cold compress on the outside of the cheek can be used.

CHIPPED TOOTH

A chipped tooth often seems like a minor concern but can develop into an infection or lead to further breakage. It is important to contact us and schedule an appointment. Rinse the area with warm water to remove any debris.

KNOCKED OUT TOOTH

Losing a tooth to trauma can have a major impact on your oral health and should be addressed immediately. If the tooth can be located, pick up by the crown (top) of the tooth and place it between the cheek and gums if in transit or in a container of warm milk. Rinse the mouth with warm water to clear the area and outside compresses can be used for pain and swelling.
