Dental Crown

A dental crown can support your dental health in many ways and is often used to address both cosmetic and restorative concerns. Covering the surface of the tooth like a cap, a dental crown strengthens and protects a tooth after damage or decay and can help avoid tooth loss in the long term.

Great Smile Dental is home to an experienced team of dentists who are committed to helping patients enjoy the best possible dental health. We offer all types of dental crowns and have an on-site dental lab where the majority of our restorations are custom made for patients. This offers a unique consistency of care, especially when placing restorations and enables us to ensure a customized result that is comfortable and natural looking.

PORCELAIN DENTAL CROWNS

WHAT TO EXPECT:  There is a range of materials that can be used in the making of a dental crown, each with benefits and drawbacks. Dr. Schamback and our team of dentists will often recommend the use of an all-white crown that is made using a high-quality ceramic such as porcelain. Porcelain has many properties that support a lasting result and natural aesthetics. Porcelain crowns are:
  • Highly durable and stain resistant when compared to natural tooth enamel and other composites
  • Reflect light much like natural teeth
  • Insulate the tooth from increased sensitivity to temperature
Dr. Schamback can also place zirconia dental crowns or zirconia-based crowns for superior durability and appearance. This option is often the best solution for crowns that are to be placed on larger back teeth where the biting and chewing forces are the strongest.

DENTAL CROWNS – WHAT TO EXPECT

The dental crown process will typically require 2 visits to complete. Once the type of crown is chosen, we will prepare the tooth by removing enough tooth structure to place and secure the crown. Dental impressions are taken to be used in making your new crown and a temporary crown is placed. In a couple of weeks, your custom dental crown will be complete. We will remove the temporary and clean the area before placing the new crown. Your dentist will make adjustments so that your bite feels comfortable and the crown fits securely on the tooth. The new crown is permanently attached and the surfaces are polished so that it blends with your smile as naturally as possible. Maintaining a good oral hygiene routine and visiting with us regularly will help you enjoy a lasting result and keep your new crown in good shape for the long term.
