What Is a Dental Emergency?

If your emergency is occurring after office hours you will be contacted by a dental professional and advised on how best to manage the emergency.

If a sizable part of the tooth is broken off and can be located, place it in a container of warm milk and bring it with you to your appointment. In some cases, we can consider using the tooth fragment as part of the repair. Rinse the mouth with warm water and if any swelling has occurred a cold compress on the outside of the cheek can be used.

A chipped tooth often seems like a minor concern but can develop into an infection or lead to further breakage. It is important to contact us and schedule an appointment. Sometimes, it’s easy to repair a chipped tooth, and it’s not serious. Other times, you may need immediate treatment.

Rinse the area with warm water to remove any debris before heading into our office.

Have something stuck in your teeth? If the object is lodged firmly and you can’t remove it using floss, we recommend calling us for a same-day appointment. Having something stuck in between your teeth or under your gums can be quite painful and may cause infection.

We recommend rinsing your mouth with warm water and taking over-the-counter pain medications until you can get to our office.

Losing a tooth to trauma can have a major impact on your oral health and should be addressed immediately. If the tooth can be located, pick it up by the crown (top) of the tooth and place it between the cheek and gums if in transit or in a container of warm milk. Rinse the mouth with warm water to clear the area and outside compresses can be used for pain and swelling.

WHEN TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM

While we can address many emergency dentistry issues, sometimes, you’ll want to go to the urgent care or emergency room instead. If you call us and have a more severe issue, we may tell you to call emergency services instead.

Generally, if you’re bleeding significantly or have dental trauma that feels like it could have broken a bone in your face, you’ll want to get emergency care. It’s always better to err on the side of caution, so listen to your body and call medical or dental professionals for advice.
