WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?

Dental crowns are made of strong materials such as porcelain that also match the color of your natural teeth. Once the crown is fitted, it will blend in with the rest of your smile for improved aesthetics and function.

Great Smile Dental is home to an experienced team of dentists who are committed to helping patients enjoy the best possible dental health.

THE BENEFITS OF PORCELAIN DENTAL CROWNS

There is a range of materials that can be used in the making of a dental crown, each with benefits and drawbacks. Our team of dentists will often recommend the use of an all-white crown that is made using high-quality ceramic such as porcelain. Porcelain has many properties that support a lasting result and natural aesthetics. Porcelain crowns are:

  • Highly durable and stain resistant when compared to natural tooth enamel and other composites
  • Reflect light much like natural teeth
  • Insulate the tooth from increased sensitivity to temperature

Our office can also place zirconia dental crowns or zirconia-based crowns for superior durability and appearance. This option is often the best solution for crowns that are to be placed on larger back teeth where the biting and chewing forces are the strongest.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The dental crown process will typically require 2 visits to complete. Once the type of crown is chosen, we will prepare the tooth by removing enough tooth structure to place and secure the crown.

Dental impressions are taken to be used in making your new crown and a temporary crown is placed. In a couple of weeks, your custom dental crown will be complete. We will remove the temporary crown and clean the area before placing the new crown. Your dentist will make adjustments so that your bite feels comfortable and the crown fits securely on the tooth.

The new crown is permanently attached and the surfaces of the dental crown are polished so that it blends with your smile as naturally as possible. Maintaining a good oral hygiene routine and visiting with us regularly will help you enjoy a lasting result and keep your new crown in good shape for the long term.

WHO NEEDS A DENTAL CROWN?

Dental crowns are ideal for patients with damaged teeth or for patients who receive dental implants. Here are some situations that may call for a dental crown:

A tooth that is weak or broken down can benefit from a dental crown. The crown will strengthen the tooth and restore it to its original function, making it easier for you to live your daily life without discomfort.

If your tooth has a significant crack, it will likely need to be restored or removed. If possible, we will try and save your tooth using a dental crown.

A dental implant involves an implant post that heals with your jaw. After healing, a replacement tooth goes on top. Often, the replacement tooth is a dental crown that attaches to the implant post.
