WHAT IS INVISALIGN?

Invisalign uses CAD/CAM technology to create a set of custom-made clear aligners that fit over the teeth like a mouthguard. Made from a clear hard-soft material that does not irritate the gums or soft tissues of the mouth, they will gently move the teeth into the desired position. Most patients enjoy comfortable treatment that does not include dietary restrictions and allows for easy removal of the aligners as needed to eat and clean your teeth.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR INVISALIGN?

The first step in determining if you are a good fit for Invisalign is scheduling an appointment with a specialist. You want to make sure you seek out an orthodontist that will help you get the best results. If your specific condition requires a more aggressive approach to correct misaligned teeth, conventional braces may be the best option for you. Invisalign can often be the perfect solution for adults with orthodontic relapse, minor dental health or cosmetic concerns. For patients who have never had braces, pictures need to be taken by a specialist to determine how the teeth can be corrected.

At Great Smile Dental, we have an orthodontist that specializes in aligning teeth, Dr West, is one of the best in Port St Lucie. Schedule an appointment with us, and Dr West can evaluate your orthodontic needs to determine if Invisalign is right for you. While most patients can benefit from this option, if there are complex concerns related to the bite or jaw structure, we may recommend other orthodontic treatments.

INVISALIGN – WHAT TO EXPECT

The Invisalign process will begin with digital impressions of your teeth, taken in our Port St. Lucie dental office. We will use these to design a personalized treatment plan that will address your unique dental concerns and transform your smile.

The impressions and treatment plan are sent to the Invisalign lab where a customized clear aligner is made to the specifications provided by your Great Smile dentist. In a few weeks time, they will be sent to our office and your treatment will begin. We will provide detailed instructions for changing the aligners and oral hygiene advice to avoid other dental concerns.

Invisalign patients will visit with us every 6-8 weeks for a checkup to monitor treatment progress and make adjustments as needed.

Most patients will complete treatment in 12-15 months, after which it is recommended that a retainer is worn nightly. This will maintain your new tooth position and prevent relapse over time.

Differences between Braces and Invisalign

The goal of Invisalign and conventional braces is to stimulate tooth movement to adjust your teeth for a better smile as well as correct your bite. Patients who have experienced gapped teeth, overbite, and crooked teeth will benefit from Invisalign or braces to obtain straighter teeth. Braces and Invisalign have differences that patients should be aware of.

Conventional Braces

Traditional braces are metal braces that use glue to adhere to your teeth by an orthodontist, and are pulled together using wires and rubber bands. The wires and bands are placed to create pressure on the teeth and so that they are moved, and they are regularly tightened and adjusted to create progressive movement in the teeth. Traditional metal braces can cause mouth soars and can be painful during adjustments. It is also very difficult to brush and floss with braces.

Your orthodontist may recommend practices such as smearing wax on the metal braces so that they do not cut your gums and give you mouth sores. Patients also need to thread floss between each tooth in order to floss correctly. You could see how it might deter you from flossing or enjoying a meal with braces. Foods such as popcorn, nuts, apples, gum, and chips can damage the braces and be difficult to eat. Traditional braces definitely require a bit of a lifestyle change!

Traditional braces can be required if teeth are to be pulled away from another tooth, or to correct a severe overbite or underbite. Depending on your unique case, braces may be required over Invisalign to give you the smile you desire. Invisalign System

The Invisalign system is a less invasive process and easier to do everyday tasks such as eating, flossing, and brushing. A series of removable aligners are used to straighten your teeth over time. You can simply take out your Invisalign aligner and pop it back in after eating. Keep in mind with Invisalign, you have to stay on top of wearing the tray. The common issue with patients is that they neglect to wear the aligner enough and it prolongs the process. To achieve straight teeth, the tray needs to be worn 22 hours per day and only taken out to eat, brush or floss.

Invisalign aligner trays are changed every 2 weeks and follow up visits are scheduled every 4-6 weeks to ensure healthy teeth movement and progress. Make sure you are scheduling your appointment for aligner changes so that we can stay on top of your progress! You may prefer Invisalign because it helps to promote dental health more than braces. Instead of threading floss in between your teeth, it is much easier to simply remove the tray, brush and floss, or have a meal.

As an orthodontic treatment, Invisalign and traditional braces are both effective teeth straightening options. Your specific condition may require a more intensive approach to correct bite issues or crooked teeth. In that case, braces will be the better option. Otherwise, we recommend you give Invisalign a try. Talk to your local orthodontist, and if you live near Port St Lucie, FL, we would love to have you at our dental practice for a consultation!
